The history of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk began in 1882, when exiled convicts began to be taken to the south of Sakhalin to create a settlement, which was called Vladimirovka. In the period from 1905 to 1945, southern Sakhalin was Japanise and the village of Vladimirovka was renamed to Toyohar. For 40 years Toyohara has grown to the size of the administrative center of all Japanese Sakhalin. After return of Sakhalin in august 1945, the city, heavily damaged in the war, began to rebuild. In June 1946 the city was renamed to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
The Sakhalin International Ski Marathon was organized in 1987 by the Committee for Physical Culture and Sports of the Sakhalin Region. In 2000 the Sakhalin Ski Marathon became an "International" and from that time was held under the patronage of the governor. Igor Farkhutdinov made a big contribution to the Sakhalin marathon, and took part himself in it for 8 times. After his death, it was decided to call the Sakhalin Marathon in memory of Igor Farkhutdinov. In 2018, the Sakhalin Ski Marathon will be held 19 time.
The feature of the Igor Farkhutdinov international Sakhalin ski marathon is the start for 35 km and 50 km is given in different places and the finish takes place in one place, which gives the scale to the event. The participants of the 50 km race start an hour earlier than the rest, and at the finish line one can often see the rivalty of the most experienced athletes with the beginners, who went to the start of such competitions for a first time.
The winner of the 50 km race will receive a certificate for 70 000 rubles, the silver winner will receive a certificate for 50,000 rubles and the bronze medalist will receive a certificate for 30,000 rubles.
In 2017 the Governor of Sakhalin Oleg Kozhemyako took part in the 35 km race for 35 km. Together with the governor, the Minister of Sports of the region Anton Zaitsev participated in the race. The participation of the governor and the minister has significantly increased the interest in this event and the number of participants.
The awarding of the winners in absolute groups was also held by the governor and the minister, which undoubtedly added positive emotions to the winners.
